GLANC Members Visit Public Glass and San Francisco Galleries
On January 10th, GLANC members traveled to San Francisco to visit one artist demonstration and two galleries.
We began our tour at Public Glass. There, David Patchen started his presentation with a short slide show presenting some of his history and the inspiration behind his beautiful glass art, along with slides of many of his pieces. We then went into the hot shop where he demonstrated how he uses the roll-up technique to make his pieces, this being done after he has made all of his own murrini. This was a really fantastic demo, and was aided by the narration of Randy Strong, a fellow glass blower and member of our Board of Directors. Randy helped us understand exactly what David was doing every step of the way.

After a delicious lunch at the Thirsty Bear, we went to Sculpturesite Gallery to view “Bay Area Glass Sculpture: An invitational juried by Dorothy and George Saxe”. This was a wonderful exhibit that showcased many different techniques of glass sculpture by 23 artists. Many of the artists were there to tell us about their work, including Jaime Guerrero, Michelle Knox, Mary White, Kathleen Elliot, Duncan House, Benjamin Brown, David Ruth, Pamina Traylor, Randy Strong, and Susan Longini. It was so interesting to hear just what these artists had to say, and to see all of the differences in their work.
We then walked a few blocks to visit Micaëla Gallery at her new location on Geary Street. There, Micaela was presenting “Winter Salon 2008”. Among the wide range of artists that were exhibiting, four artists were there to talk about their work: Gary Clemenceau and Scott Kildall, both of whom are not glass artists, and Michelle Knox and David Ruth. Micaela also spoke about some of the work by glass artists who were not present.

The entire day proved to be a very enjoyable, enlightening, and educational experience.
